Looking Glass Nez Perce chief
Looking Glass Nez Perce chief Direct Download!
1849

This is a true story:  There was a young girl, about 14 at the time, who was the niece of Looking Glass.  Looking Glass was the War Chief of the Nez Perce during the Nez Perce war.  At the site of the final battle with the U.S. Army in a cold place called Bear Paw, the Army told the Nez Perce under a flag of truce to stack their rifles up and they would be allowed to leave in peace.  As soon as Nez Perce did this, the Army opened fire.  One of the chiefs offered many horses up to anyone who would run up, under that stream of bullets and retrieve the rifles.  No one was brave (or foolish?) enough to try this.  Until, finally, this 14 year old niece said she would do it.  One rifle at a time, this young girl retrieved enough rifles to drive the cowardly soldiers back.  Although this battle ended in defeat for the Nez Perce, this young girl was one of the few to escape to Canada.  A couple of years later, she married another Nez Perce.  They had a child, who grew up and had a son, who grew up and had a daughter, who grew up and married me!

By the way, Dad said she never got her horses.
